Purchase Without a Cause
So I'm at the yarn store again today and one of the gals was crocheting a market bag out of some of my most favorite yarn, Gedifra Tiago. And wouldn't you know, the stuff was on sale for 40% off--don't know why, it better not be discontinued because argh I have a pattern in the you know using it--and next thing I know, I buy enough of it to make not one, but two market bags.
Yeah, $50 worth of yarn for two market bags.
Market bags that I can get for a buck at Whole Foods. Ones that stuff won't fall out of.
Ones that are already sitting in the back of my car waiting to be filled.
Three of them.
Yeah, that's right. I already have three market bags in the back of my car.
And only four waiting to be hand made. By me. (Two Tiago's and two out of that Berroco NaturLin)
Gosh knows when I will find the time to make them. Someone, please, call the authorities.
P.S. We may be visiting the "happiest" place on earth this weekend. The in-laws are here and it is looking like I'll have to go along for three days. I suppose I could fake a worse limp and sit by the pool, crocheting, instead.

Or you could fake a worse limp and get to the front of the lines!!

oooh girl, do you remember way back when you said something about "why do I knit stuff I don't need/won't use?" and then basically (like all of us) said, what the heck! Because it's there! Also, you could (unsolicited advice time) donate them to somebody somewhere who needs help with their paper/plastic bag problem at the market. I dunno!
Am new to your blog and admit I have read archives heavily over the last few rainy days here in Oregon. Nice to meet cha, charmed, competely. Oh, and great knitting/crafting stuff too! I am going to start on the Somewhat Cowl from a kit (thanks kpixie) soon! I admire your approach to life and knitting, keep it up and sanity reigns, for us all!

I completely understand you. Better yet, my yarn waiting to be knit into market bags understand you.
I taught my BIL to knit at the "happiest place on Earth." It's a great place to knit. Just take some thing you know and can be tossed into you bag easily. Like a sock. You'll be amazed how much you can get done waiting in lines.

I'd definitely fake a worse limp and maybe a death cough or something to get out of going to the happy place. My brother and his wife and their two kids live a Disney lifestyle. It's a little creepy to me but to each his or her own. And one can never have too many market bags. Just maybe not the time to knit them?

Who says knitting isn't funny? :P
You should definitely work that poor hip to your advantage and stay by the pool in Anaheim. Have fun!

Oooh, that was not a purchase without a cause, that was a purchase out of panic! Now, I happen to love the happiest place on earth, but oh, in-laws - that's cause for panic, at least in most houses!

I had to laugh about the market bag - I am in a monthly stash club and our March yarn was a lovely organic cotton and the suggested pattern was a market bag. Well it's May and it wasn't happening and I only have a zillion market bags so when some in the club wanted to buy another skein I happily did some yarn reduction. So that I could be the person in May who wanted a second skein of the monthly selection. Naturally.
Egads on the happiest place on earth. But then I was a nerdy kid who preferred epcot.

I prefer Epcot, too!

Nursie lecture: don't go on those rides with your injury. Limp or no limp. You don't need forces beyond your control to set you back now, do you? End lecture.
Staying by the pool is the perfect alternative. Gosh, I wish I could crochet. Maybe I should take a class because I just can't teach myself like I did with knitting.
Have fun at the happiest place. BTW, is that possible with in laws?

I've been staring at that Tiago every time I go in... Please tell me how many I might need for whatever you may have in the "you know"! :)

Oh, let's see, you'll need about 9 balls. Run in before it's too late. They have a bag of 10 balls in a nice white color.

Just wanted to share my excitement over seeing you mentioned on Knitting Daily TV, you're the first one listed: "Featured Knitting Daily guests include Wendy Bernard...."
And then I went over to Ravelry searching for projects using Summer Tweed, and what did I see but a knitter showing a finished Elinor Tunic already!
http://www.ravelry.com/projects/gaysknits/elinor-tunic
And holy cow, a turn back on my tab to Ravelry, I see two more finished tunics of yours! Go take a look! Very very exciiiting...and very fast knitters!

But :::waving patchouli::: those Whole Foods bags are made in China and those bags (waiting) made by you are not. I would also recommend www.reusablebags.com. Do it.

You could always say to heck with market bags and make tank tops for the kidlet. Of course if you have your heart set on making something you don't need, you could make dog sweaters and matching hats.
Also, an exaggerated limp only works if the kid buys it too. Otherwise it will slip out that you were hanging upside down off the monkey bars yesterday.

*cough*

Welcome to the market bag clan.
I've made a "bunch" for end of school teacher & teacher aides gifts. I find they are a great portable in the"in the car ..still waiting" project. Most of mine are hempathy, but i just recently purchased cones of valley yarns 100% cotton. Imagine ..CONES!! How many can i make from those and they are only $17. Why yes I'm hooked..

You can never have enough market bags. Seriously.
And if they are different colors, then that's a bonus! :o)

too funny! I have 5 Winco market bags in the back of my car, that get used every week and one handmade market bag on the needles at home. I couldn't pass up a great deal on some raw silk yarn from my lys and just knew I could use a market bag....too bad the silk is so hard for me to knit with. I may never finish it. grrrr. Ah, Good Intentions!
Good luck on the limp!

oohhhh, market bag....make me one!
Posted by: darlene | May 30, 2008 at 07:46 AM
I knit one last summer for a friend who was movieg to Paris, because really, a handmade market bag is so much more chic than one from Whole Foods, and we can be eco and chic at the same time, n'est-ce pas?
Posted by: Rebecca | May 30, 2008 at 08:35 AM
you could give the bags as gifts...or raffler them off to reader fans like moi :)
