Knitting, Funny?

_mg_3066edit_2 I was just saying (before I accidentally deleted the post that came before this, the one that I hope is like this one, oy) that embroidering balls is a heck of a lot more laughter inducing that knitting is. Just yesterday we were having our Temari class and Betty asked, "Hey Leslie, why are you working the three inch-ers instead of the suggested four incher-ers?"

"Because I like smaller balls," she replied.

Hilarity ensued.

After everything calmed down and we got to serious stitching again, Betty said to Leslie, "My balls are bigger than your balls."

Hilarity erupted once again. (Ball jokes sure are cheap, but I tell you what, they are effective as all get out.)

Oh, I wish knitting were half as funny as stitching Temari balls.

Knitting just isn't funny. Consider running into a gal whose knitting is just so awful that you are speechless when she presents it to you? I remember a time when someone showed me a baby cardigan, it was so full of dropped stitches and twisted ones and uneven stitches and whatnot that my mouth went agape. But what did I say? I said: "It is just lovely."

I mean, what else could I have said? Could I have said: "Wow, lady! You did a boat-load of crap of knitting on that garment, woweeee! Have you considered taking up Paint-by-Numbers?"

That said, I'm thinking that the Knitting isn't as funny as stitching Temari balls. I can't even consider laughing about someone else's dropped stitch(es). Imagine laughing at someone's dropped stitch, or worse, an uneven hem, or even worse, worse worse, a wonky mattress stitch. Just imagine what would happen if you openly mocked a knitter's work while in a group. You might get your eye poked out or_mg_3106edit_2 something.

HWWV took pics at Yogaworks today, where Girlfriend was having a class. Here's a sample.

I love Temari! Is that yours that you are working on? LOVE the colors.

Yep, it was quite entertaining yesterday, wasn't? lol

You're ball looks great, BTW. Mine isn't quite that far along yet. I just put in my four rows of rust.

It's funny we both decided to continue the same one. I find it fascinating. :)

I must live in a different dimension. I don't know what Temari is. I only know I don't have the balls to do it.

Ball jokes, fart jokes - I keep thinking I should have outgrown this stuff, but nope...

nice ball, by the way

I am intrigued with the Temari. Can you recommend a book?

Thanks

Beautiful photography!

Knitting is so funny but laughing at someone else's wadders is not. Me, I hold up all my recklessly awful knitting on Ravelry if only so that someone who's afraid their work won't be good enough can look at mine and say, "well, I'm sure nothing I make will be as bad as THAT!!" I hope to empower people by being the Rodney Dangerfield of knitting. Admittedly, this is not everyone's gift.

By the way, Wendy, your work is beautiful. Don't be down because some cranky people might not like it. We all have our own taste. Would it cheer you up if I buy one of your patterns and then "interpret" it in my own hideously unique way (complete with "upholstery" yarn?)? Please advise. Just tryin' to help; I hate to see you so blue.

love the photograph of the yoga class and wow can someone actually do that??? hhwv is a fab photographer isn't he and i hope no one is mocking my mattress stitches or my uneven or wonky ones i'm akways so proud!!!

Girlfriend Yoga!!!
How cool is that!

Wendy,
If you knitted with me,
I would make you laugh.
And I would laugh at your stories.
You need to knit with Tammy,
she is so funny. There are funny knitters even if knitting isn't funny ;o)

Well, at least you can wear your knitting - what do you do with temari balls anyway?

Sometimes you can't help burst out with "Is it supposed to look like that?"
I did that once at a knitting group & you know what the woman said? "That's what the other woman asked already." It wasn't just me!

haha! i love your stories! and ball jokes never ever get old.

girlfriend looks great doing yoga!

Loving the Girlfriend Yoga! My teenagers do yoga as part of the their training in club soccer...it is a great focusing tool for the team.

Where is the class for Temari Balls...I would love to take one...your experiences have sparked my interest.

If that's yoga, sign me up!! That looks like such fun. :)

That is a tough looking yoga class! Is that their feet on the wall? How did they do that?

Wendy, I have to tell you, you must be hanging out with the wrong group of knitters. We always have fun at our knitting groups, and although we don't make fun of each other's knitting, lots of funny topics regarding knitting always come up. For example, you're tight and I'm loose. As in knitting styles, still a good one that always cracks my group up. Talking about yarn ball sizes, big balls, small ones, still funny. Balls are always a crackup in any craft, I think. Last week our knit group came up with an idea of having gangsta knitting signals. We never came up with any good ones but cracked ourselves up trying to come up with some.

Yep, you read that name correctly...my last name is Ball. I got married last October and it's ENDLESS how many opportunities there are to use the last name in a cheesy punchline! Balls are funny!

You would have fit right in with our group in Italy. We acted like 12 year old boys.

Stacey: I have a friend with the last name, Ball. She always signs her Christmas cards, "With love, from the Balls"

I asked her if she ever felt funny about it.

Even though it is her married name, she didn't get the joke.

Knitting, to me, is like life. Sometimes it is deadly seriously and sometimes it is so funny even I can't help but make fun of my own life/knitting. The best any of us can do is to try to hit somewhere in the middle and enjoy the heck out of it! That's life and that's knitting.

Your ball is so pretty!

(I read you on Google Reader, and both posts showed up. It was interesting reading the "deleted" one, and then the do-over.)

'a boat load of crap knitting'
see, that is funny.
And I think ball jokes will be funny forever.

You are a much much nicer knitter than I am. I've laughed at dropped stitches and terrible gauge more times than I should probably admit. But I always make sure to save the biggest laughs for my own Failed Adventures in Knitting.

Glad someone else commented on your gorgeous pattern in the latest Interweave Knits (on the facing page right at the start of the pattern section!) ! Very "you" my dear, with that wonderful, natural looking textured yarn, and that great side detail. Way cool. Also excited to see in their Buzz section, right at the TOP, there was your Labyrinth design, which is more than way cool, that one is sexy and really spectacular. We smile here to see you shine. You are our star.

About your Ball friends who didn't get the joke - I recently told my Wendy here how rude it was when I clowned around and did a hula in front of my husband 12 years ago, and his friend replied "maybe she wants to get laid". I told my daughter how rude it was for his friend to say that - she pointed out the pun.....I wanted to get "lei-ed". Whatchoo think about a 12 year uptake on finally getting a joke? Holy smokes. Now that's slooooow. :)

I love your ball. There, I've said it. I actually think ball jokes are funnier to women in their middle aged years (I'm 40-something) than any other age demographic. Why is that, I ponder...

Way to handle those balls!
Hee hee
