That Regia is very nice. I do the same thing with yarn stores. If they don't have any good sock yarn, they're just not a very good yarn store.

Tammy

The yarn stores in So Cal really don't take their sock yarn seriously enough. There's such a variety out there, yet we are lucky to get a wee sampling. Of course there's always the wall of Koigu at the one trendy L.A. store... ahhhhh.

Sandra

oh, that regia is divine. wow.

My favourite WTF moment came while calling around to local NYC LYSes this last winter, in search of some Lorna's (or really any solid manly sock yarn) for Dad Christmas present socks. Speaking to one rather publicized one in the Union Square area, which hosts "men-only" knit nights -- I was hoping I might be more likely to find sock yarn there that wasn't variegated, or pink --

Me: "Hi, I'm looking for sock yarn -- do you have any in stock? What kinds and colors?"
Girl, placidly: "Absolutely, we have Malabrigo --
Me, thinking she'd misheard: "I'm sorry, I said *sock* yarn --"
Girl, still placidly: "Yes, we recommend Malabrigo to our customers who would like to make socks."
Me, making one last effort to clarify: "Are we talking about the worsted-weight single-ply merino from Uruguay?"
Girl, placid to the last: "Yes, it's very soft, our customers love it."

I don't think I've ever had a shop fly so quickly to the Don't Like Or Trust end of my scale.

Wendy

Oh my, Michelle. I can't imagine walking on that stuff! (but can't you hear them say, "But, it's so soft!")

Hi Wendy,
I love reading your blog!! I also agree. I even have my own pet peeve. As I am a person with a full time job outside of the 24-7 job of raising kids, I don't always get to my LYS on Saturdays. What is it with these stuck up LYS that are not open on Sundays??!! What if I was a more observant Jew? How would I purchase yarn if I am not supposed to spend money on my sabbath, which is Saturday?? Thank goodness the local Ben Franklin crafts has a wonderful woman who does all their buying and is super helpful for those time I can get a night away from my girls or some time on a Sunday. What good is a wall of sock yarn if I can't get to it? BTW, have you checked out http://www.thiskittenknits.com/ I swear her older daughter looks like girlfriend unless what I have seen of girlfriend through pictures is not completely accurate. Have a nice evening.

Wendy

I can see the resemblance!

I have the same urge to judge yarn stores based on their sock yarn selection, yet perversely, my favorite LYS has the worst sock yarn selection I've ever seen. It's gradually getting better - it started out a handful of skeins of cherry tree hill, a few skeins of lang jawoll - never seemed to be two of the same color - and lion brand magic stripes. It's now worked its way up to carrying regia silk in boring colors, a little bit of trekking, some meilenweit and claudia's handpaints. I love the store for its wide and varied selection of everything else, but when I want sock yarn, I don't go there.

flutter

Oh the yarn pr0n. Oh how I need the yarn

amy

You know, now that you mention it, there's a LYS near me that doesn't carry laceweight, or super chunky, or vareigated, or handpaints... or sock yarn. Just a lot of worsted and DK in solid colors. A very respectable assortment of worsted and DK in lots and lots of solid colors, but still... I knew there was something I didn't like about that store.

mwknitter

I have yet to find a yarn store that has a really nice selection of sock yarn although my favorite store does have the best selection of any in this area. I generally buy sock yarn online.

Pam

It may have been a dream, but that's about what I think when I go into a new yarn shop. It's as if sock yarn is an afterthought. It also accounts for why I buy all my sock yarn online. Even though there's a boom in sock knitting, stores everywhere seem to have slow in keeping up. All they're doing is losing business.

Sock yarn is to yarn shops what Chicken Caesar Salad is to restaurants. I can always tell if I'll be back by the quality.

Can I hijack this to ask Michelle if she found a decent sock yarn store in NYC? I've had similar experiences as her in 2 of them - one of them LIED to me when I called beforehand to ask about Lornas Laces then acted like I was the one with the problem when I got there. I've been shopping online for my sock yarn but sometimes, you know, you just need to touch it first.

My two cents as a former LYSOwner - especially with Regia, two skeins may look identical but may in fact be two different colorways. I didn't rubberband our Regias together because I never thought about it but if I still had the shop, I probably would! Too often in the very beginning we thought we sold and the customer thought they'd bought two of the same only to get into the second sock to realize it was different! Now to forward this to the new owner of my former shop!!

Tracey

Heehee! I use the sock yarn/yarn shop gauge as well. You could always ask about that pesky little rubberband.

Katie

Both my LYS carry sock yarn but not a great selection. I wonder if it's because sock knitters are greedy and snatch it up before I get there or if the owners just don't stock enough variety.

Wanda

Well, it doesn't bother me when someone says that they are a yarn snob. I say it and don't feel bad. If others want to knit with acrylic, go right ahead. I don't mind yarns with some acrylic content, but it's not my preference. I prefer natural fibers and don't see anything wrong with that.

I always gravitate towards sock yarn, b/c often times I will not be buying enough for a garment, but one can never have enough socks?

Emily

I love your blog, Wendy! I just finished reading it from the beginning, and I can't wait for the you-know. I'm all about sock yarn, too, though I live in Michigan, so I can wear just about any weight of wool for most of the year :)

Leslie

Hey Wendy,

So where did you go? Inquiring minds want to know... lol

Leslie

Wendy,

I just saw your comment on our LYS's sock yarn. If you're not buying there, where are you buying at?

knittingnurse

Y'know, that's the ONE thing that kind of irks me about the LYS since I've moved. . . . they will not sell you a single skein of sock yarn. Everything in twos (unless it's a 100 gm ball of course). Kind of sucks when you want to get a single skein for toes and heels, etc. . . .
